The Motion Picture Association of America and National Association of Theater Owners will institute a series of changes and specific revisions in rules that includes a new admonishment to parents that particular "R" films aren't suitable for youngsters, reports Variety. You can thank Kirby Dick, the documentarian of "This Film Is Not Yet Rated." "The documentary made it clear that we probably haven't done as much as we can to explain how it all works," MPAA chairman Dan Glickman told Daily Variety. As a result, expect more transparency and less secrecy in the system, despite the fact that board judges will still remain anonymous; an extensive outreach and education program for parents; and the power of filmmakers to reference other films in an appeal. While the Sundance Film Festival's in full swing, Glickman and Joan Graves, chairwoman of the Classification & Rating Administration, will meet with filmmakers, producers and executives in a roundtable to discuss reforms to the erroneous system. Again, you can read to your heart's content at Variety. Change is good.
