Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet will star in Sam Mendes' "Revolutionary Road," an adaptation of Richard Yates' bleak 1961 novel about post-war disillusionment, reports Variety. Justin Haythe wrote the script. John N. Hart, Scott Rudin, Bobby Cohen and Mendes will produce in association with BBC Films for Paramount Pictures. In "Revolutionary Road," a seemingly happy suburban couple with two children in the 1950s is torn between desires and a pressure to conform, with explosive consequences.
Sony Pictures Classics Acquires Coppola's Next
Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner's United Artists lost a bid to Sony Pictures Classics to acquire Francis Ford Coppola's new film, "Youth Without Youth," an adaptation of Romanian philosopher Mircea Eliade's novella with Tim Roth, Alexandra Maria Lara and Bruno Ganz, reports The Hollywood Reporter. "Youth Without Youth," told in Europe prior to World War II, is about an elderly professor's mysterious rejuvenation. "It is a love story wrapped in a mystery," Coppola said.
Jet Li to Star in 'The Mummy 3'
Jet Li ("Hero") is in negotiations to star as an ancient emperor of China in "The Mummy 3" (July 11, 2008) for director Rob Cohen ("Stealth") and Universal Pictures, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Alfred Gough and Miles Millar ("Shanghai Noon") wrote the script. Stephen Sommers ("Van Helsing") and Bob Ducsay, with Sean Daniel and Jim Jacks, will produce.
Crowe to Direct 'Bra Boys'
Russell Crowe will direct "Bra Boys," a dramatization of the countercultural shift in Australia's surf community, at Universal Pictures, reports Variety. Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer will produce. Stuart Beattie ("Collateral") will write the script. Crowe was narrator on a documentary about the subject, the focus of which was Sunny, Koby and Jai Abberton, sibling pioneers of the underground surf movement in the Sydney seaside suburb of Maroubra.
Writer Aboard Spielberg's "Interstellar"
Jonah Nolan ("Memento") will write "Interstellar," a space adventure about wormholes and parallel dimensions with Steven Spielberg on a shortlist to direct, for Paramount Pictures, reports Variety. Caltech physicist and relativity expert Kip S. Thorne's scientific theories about time travel in space is the basis for the concept of "Interstellar." Nolan co-wrote "The Prestige" and "Batman Begins" sequel "The Dark Knight" with the films' director Christopher Nolan, his brother.
