TiVo alert! Andrew Neel and Luke Meyer's terrific "Darkon" will premiere Monday, Nov. 12, at 9 p.m. on IFC and replay at 1 a.m. Tuesday. If you love the sociological humor and poignancy of NBC's "The Office," program the TiVo now. I caught "Darkon" at the Woodstock Film Festival in October 2006. Read The Scout's review (below).
The Scout, Oct 19, 2006: Skip Lipman so desperately desires to be a hero, to lead, to conquer, to live, to matter, and in Andrew Neel and Luke Meyer’s irresistible documentary, hundreds like Skip (or Bannor, as he’s known in the imaginary universe of Darkon) retreat into a realm of rich fantasy in the forests and meadows of Maryland from dead-end jobs, social foibles or, worse, hopeless, downtrodden existences. Outcasts in suburbia, but lords, warriors and elves in a make-believe medieval wilderness haven, participants engage in a histrionic conquest for hexes of terrain. A hilarious, poignant and gracious illumination of an extravagant subculture, “Darkon” also expertly grasps the essence of a much bigger conceit: Our addiction to escape. B+
