Keanu Reeves will star as Klaatu in an update of Robert Wise's 1951 classic "The Day The Earth Stood Still" (May 9, 2008) at 20th Century Fox, reports Variety. Scott Derrickson ("The Exorcism of Emily Rose") will direct. David Scarpa wrote the script, about Klaatu, a humanoid extraterrestrial sent to Earth with an ultimatum: Cease fire or risk annihilation. Production begins in Vancouver in November.
Stone Back in Vietnam
Oliver Stone will direct the Vietnam War docudrama "Pinkville," about the U.S. Army's mass murder of 347 to 504 defenseless Vietnamese civilians Mar. 16, 1968, in the hamlet of My Lai, reports Variety. Bruce Willis and Channing Tatum will star. Mikko Alanne wrote the script. United Artists will finance a budget of roughly $40 million, and MGM will distribute.
'Soloist' Now a Duet
Robert Downey Jr. will join Jamie Foxx in "The Soloist," reports Variety. Foxx will star as Nathaniel Ayers, a homeless, schizophrenic musical prodigy (uh, huh) and Downey Jr. as Steve Lopez, a Los Angeles Times journalist with whom Ayers develops a professional relationship. Joe Wright ("Pride & Prejudice") will direct. Susannah Grant ("Catch & Release," "Erin Brockovich") wrote the script. Gary Foster and Russ Krasnoff will produce, Rikki Bestall will co-produce and Tim Bevan will executive produce. Production will start in January in Los Angeles.
