Hanks, Howard Back for 'Da Vinci' Prequel
Tom Hanks is in final negotiations to return as Robert Langdon in "Angels and Demons" (Dec. 19, 2008), an adaptation of Dan Brown's novel and a prequel to "The Da Vinci Code," for Columbia Pictures, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Ron Howard will return to direct. Akiva Goldsman ("The Da Vinci Code," "A Beautiful Mind") will write the script, in which Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon attempts to solve a murder and impede a secret sect's plot to destroy the Vatican.
Ricci Aboard 'Speed Racer' as Trixie
Christina Ricci ("Black Snake Moan") will star as Trixie, Speed's loyal and courageous girlfriend, in Andy and Larry Wachowski’s “Speed Racer” (May 9, 2008), an adaptation of Tatsuo Yoshida's cult anime of the 1960s, for Warner Bros. Pictures, reports Variety. Ricci joins Emile Hirsch as Speed, and Susan Sarandon and John Goodman as Mom and Pops Racer. Fishburne to Voice The Silver Surfer in 'Fantastic Four'
Laurence Fishburne ("The Matrix," "Akeelah and the Bee") will voice The Silver Surfer in "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" (June 15), reports Ain't It Cool News. The intergalactic herald The Silver Surfer scours the universe for suitable sustenance (i.e. Earth) for Galactus, a cosmic adversary to The Fantastic Four.
Mamet Tightens 'Redbelt'
David Mamet ("House of Games," "Spartan") will direct "Redbelt," about a Jiu-Jitsu master prey to a seedy West Los Angeles underworld cabal, at Sony Pictures Classics, reports Variety. Malkovich, Lilly in Canada's 'Afterwards'
John Malkovich and Evangeline Lilly (TV's "Lost") will star in Gilles Bourdos' "Afterwards," a supernatural thriller in which a workaholic lawyer befriends a mysterious doctor with the power to predict death, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Bourdos and Michel Spinosa wrote the script, an adaptation of Guillaume Musso's novel "Et apres ... ." The shoot begins in New York and Montreal in June.
Chan, Li Team for 'Kingdom'
Jackie Chan and Jet Li will star in "The Forbidden Kingdom," for Lionsgate and The Weinstein Company, reports The Hollywood Reporter. John Fusco ("Young Guns," "Hidalgo") wrote the script, and Rob Minkoff ("Stuart Little") will direct. Casey Silver will produce and Ryan Kavanaugh will executive produce. "It's an honor to be working with Jackie and Jet, and a testament to the quality of John's script. Rob's passion and perspective on the movie promise an exciting ride for the audience," said Silver. In "The Forbidden Kingdom," an American teenager discovers an antique relic in a Chinatown pawnshop and mysteriously transports to ancient China to band with warriors on a dangerous quest to free The Monkey King. Production begins in China in May.
Gosnell Heads 'South of the Border'
Raja Gosnell ("Scooby Doo," "Never Been Kissed") will direct "South of the Border," about an anthropomorphic Beverly Hills chihauhua lost in Mexico, for Walt Disney Pictures, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Analisa Labianco wrote the script, and David Hoberman, Todd Lieberman and John Jacobs will produce. Gosnell will, too, direct "Book Club," a romantic comedy in which a desperate man blackmails a cliquey woman's book club in order to woo an old girlfriend back, at The Weinstein Company, reports Variety. Scott on 'Dollard's War on Hollywood'
Director Tony Scott ("Man on Fire," "Deja Vu") will develop a biographical treatise on Pat Dollard, a sleazy Hollywood agent and, now, war documentarian, from a Vanity Fair article "Pat Dollard's War on Hollywood," reports The Hollywood Reporter. Dollard and the article's author, Evan Wright, will write the script.
'Casino Royale' Screenwriters to Write 'Barbarella'
Neal Purvis and Robert Wade ("Casino Royale") will write a revamp of Roger Vadim's erotic camp classic "Barbarella" (1968) for Dino and Martha De Laurentis, producers, reports Variety. "Barbarella is the ultimate science-fiction adventure heroine: smart, strong funny and sexy," De Laurentiis said. "I'm excited to reintroduce Barbarella to a new generation." Jane Fonda was the star of the original as a kittenish sexpot.
Bullock Knows 'All About Steve'
Sandra Bullock will star in "All About Steve," about a brilliant crossword constructor in love with a television cameraman, for Fox 2000, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Phil Traill, recipient of Europe's prestigious Cinema Jove award for shorts, will direct, and Kim Barker wrote the script. Sarsgaard, Cruz Join Roth's 'Dying Animal'
Peter Sarsgaard, Dennis Hopper, Penelope Cruz, Ben Kingsley, Patricia Clarkson and Deborah Harry will star in "Dying Animal," an adaptation of Philip Roth's novella about a graduate student in an erotic affair with her professor, reports Variety.
