Rodriguez to Direct 'Barbarella'
Robert Rodriguez ("Grindhouse," "Sin City") will direct a revamp of Roger Vadim's erotic camp classic "Barbarella" (1968) for Universal Pictures, reports Variety. Neal Purvis and Robert Wade ("Casino Royale") will write the script. "I love this iconic character and all that she represents, and I'm truly excited by the challenge of inviting a new audience into her universe," Rodriguez said. Martha and Dino De Laurentiis will produce. "Barbarella is the ultimate science-fiction adventure heroine: smart, strong funny and sexy," Dino De Laurentiis said. "I'm excited to reintroduce Barbarella to a new generation." Jane Fonda was the star of the original as a kittenish sexpot mercenary.

Branagh to Star in Singer's 'Valkyrie'
Kenneth Branagh will star with Tom Cruise in Bryan Singer's "Valkyrie," a dramatization of actual events in which German generals hatch a scheme to assassinate Adolf Hitler at the height of World War II, reports Variety. Christopher McQuarrie ("The Usual Suspects") and Nathan Alexander wrote the script. Paula Wagner, Singer, McQuarrie and Cruise will produce for United Artists. Production begins July 19 in Berlin.

Craig Experiences 'Flashbacks'
Daniel Craig ("Casino Royale") will star in Baillie Walsh's "Flashbacks of a Fool," in which a Hollywood star's career collapses in midlife, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Walsh wrote the script. Helen McCrory and Olivia Williams ("The Sixth Sense") co-star.

Hughes Brothers Open 'Book of Eli'
Allen and Albert Hughes ("From Hell") will direct the post-apocalyptic "Book of Eli," in which a vagabond wanders an American wasteland with a sacred text and key , for Warner Bros. Pictures, reports Variety. Gary Whitta wrote the script. Joel Silver ("The Matrix") will produce with Susan Downey and Erik Olsen.

McQuarrie to Write 'No Man's Land'
Christopher McQuarrie ("The Usual Suspects") will write "No Man's Land," a World War I triptych in which an American perimedic enlists in the French Foreign Legion, a British soldier faces false accusations of cowardice and a German soldier in the trenches to illustrate the complexity and carnage of the war to end all wars, reports Variety. Todd Wagner, Marc Butan and Mark Cuban will executive produce, and Nigel Sinclair and Guy East will produce.

'Long Good Friday' Remake Bought
Sony Pictures Entertainment will distribute Paul W.S. Anderson's remake of John Mackenzie's gangster noir "The Long Good Friday" (1980), reports Variety. Production will begin next year in the United States, with Miami to substitute for the original's London. Anderson wrote the script, and Jeremy Bolt and Patrick Meehan will produce. Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren were cast in the original.
