The Palme d'Or

At the 60th Annual Cannes Film Festival, Cristian Mungiu's taut, gritty "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days," in which a college girl pursues an illegal abortion in communist Romania, won the Palme d'Or. "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days" furthers the theory of an emergence of a "Romanian New Wave" in postmodern cinema, with Romanian Cristi Puiu’s fantastic "The Death of Mr. Lazarescu" (2006) in similar company. Grand Prix: Naomi Kawase's "The Mourning Forest" (Japan)
Special Jury Prize: Carlos Reygadas' "Stelle Licht" (Mexico) and Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud's "Persepolis" (France)
Best Director: Julian Schnabel, "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" (France)
Best Actor:
Konstantin Lavronenko, "The Banishment" (Russia)
Best Actress: Jeon do-yeong, "Secret Sunshine" (South Korea)
Best Screenplay: Fatih Akin, "The Edge of Heaven" (Germany)
Special 60th Anniversary Award: Gus Van Sant, "Paranoid Park" (United States)
