Cruise stars as Senator Jasper Irving, a charismatic presidential hopeful in a bureaucratic tug-of-war with a journalist (Meryl Streep) as she threatens to expose a truth about the war that will, no doubt, precipitate his ruin. Redford stars as an idealistic college professor with a former student — now a soldier in Afghanistan — in harm’s way.
