Robert De Niro and Al Pacino will star in "Righteous Kill," a thriller about detectives in pursuit of a serial killer, reports Variety. Jon Avnet ("Red Corner," ") will direct and produce. Russell Gewirtz ("Inside Man") wrote the script. Production will begin August 6 in Connecticut.
Carnahan, Bateman Together for 'Fellows'
Joe Carnahan ("Smokin' Aces," "Narc") will direct "The Remarkable Fellows," with Jason Bateman ("The Ex") to star, reports Variety. Richard Gladstein, Carnahan and Bateman will produce for Universal Pictures. Joe Carnahan wrote the script, in which a couple of siblings inherit a family business in which the trade is revenge.
Butler Joins 'Untouchables' Prequel
Gerald Butler ("300") will star in Brian De Palma's "The Untouchables: Capone Rising," a prequel to De Palma's own "The Untouchables" (1987), reports Variety. Nicolas Cage will star as a younger Al Capone, Robert De Niro was cast as the mobster in the original. Principal photography begins in October.
'Taps' to be Remade
20th Century Fox and New Regency will develop a remake of Harold Becker's "Taps" (1981), in which loyal cadets seize control of a military academy, reports Variety. Frank E. Flowers ("Haven") will write the script. George C. Scott, Tom Cruise, Timothy Hutton and Sean Penn were cast in the original.
Macdonald to Land 'Eagle'
Kevin Macdonald ("The Last King of Scotland") will direct "The Eagle of the Ninth," an adaptation of Rosemary Sutcliff's classic 1954 epic novel about a Roman soldier's perilous quest to discover the truth about the mysterious disappearance of a sacred legion, reports Variety. Jeremy Brock ("The Last King of Scotland") will write the script. Duncan Kenworthy will produce. Production will begin next year in Scotland and Romania.
Singer, Van Sant Want Milk
Bryan Singer ("The Usual Suspects") and Gus Van Sant ("Elephant") separately seek to direct an account about openly homosexual San Francisco politician and gay rights activist Harvey Milk, shot to death, with San Francisco Mayor George Moscone, in 1978, reports Variety. Warner Independent Productions and Singer is near a deal with Participant Productions to develop an adaptation of Randy Shilts' novel about Milk, "The Mayor of Castro Street," with Christopher McQuarrie ("The Usual Suspects") to write the final draft. Van Sant, meanwhile, was in Hollywood several weeks ago to push Dustin Lance Black's (HBO's "Big Love") latest script about Milk.
Kidman to 'Marry a Millionaire'
Nicole Kidman will produce and likely star in a remake of Jean Negulesco's classic "How to Marry a Millionaire" (1953), reports The Hollywood Reporter. Sacha Gervasi ("The Terminal") will write the script. Marilyn Monroe was cast in the original.
Scott to Direct 'Child 44'
Ridley Scott ("Matchstick Men," "Gladiator") will direct "Child 44," an adaptation of Tom Rob Smith's novel in which a Russian police officer, a fugitive of the Stalinist government, embarks on a rogue investigation of a series of child homicides, reports Variety. Scott will next direct, "Penetration," an adaptation of David Ignatius' novel "Body of Lies," about an CIA agent in pursuit of Al Qaeda. Leonardo DiCaprio will star, and William Monahan ("The Departed") will write the script.
De Laurentiises Call Upon 'Swarm'
Dino and Martha De Laurentiis will develop Frank Schatzing's apocalyptic novel "The Swarm" with producers Michael Souvignier, Ica Souvignier and Till Gronemeyer, reports Variety. Ted Tally ("Silence of the Lambs") will write the script, in which scientists attempt to subvert an ecological apocalypse, the product of oceanic extraterrestials, apparent echoes to James Cameron's foreign in "The Abyss" (1989).
